Comment: In all these years, I've never made it to a Lee reunion. My Florida trips were mainly to the Gulf side since my parents were on Siesta Key. It will be so much fun to be back in Jacksonville--I'm really looking forward to the celebration with you all! | |
What have you been doing for the past 60 years?:
After graduating from Queens in Charlotte, I moved to Chicago and lived near the Water Tower. So much fun! I coordinated a preventive care program at Northwestern University Medical Center and then later became membership liaison for the Greater North Michigan Avenue Association. A move to Texas brought graduate studies at TCU, stints in advertising, and my own commercial writing business with long-term clients nationwide. I\'m retired but still collaborate regularly as editor for one of them. My dear Jim Atkinson passed away in 2018. On top of all our community activities, we dug into historical research and co-authored two works: Fort Worth\'s Huge Deal .. and Lives of Texas Brick and Their Makers. Parties have expressed interest in print publication, so we shall see. For now, I manage both e-books on our website: www.ruffbrickroad.com |

In the summer of '61 my family of ten took a vacation to West Palm Beach not knowing that Dad was actually going there to take a look at a large construction job and locate a home to rent when we moved. Carol Johns, Class of '62, was my BFF at the time so we talked her mom into letting Carol go along with us. We shared a friend' home with their two high school-aged sons while the parents were on vacation in Connecticut for three weeks. Our trip turned out to be a wonderful summer vacation. Carol a brief summer romance with Tommy while I fell for a guy by the name of George. I wasn't too upset when I learned that Dad got the job and we would be moving to WPB in August '61. As soon as it sunk in, I was horrified that I would not get to graduate with my Robert E. Lee Class of '62 or Carol! I was the only senior who had not taken biology before my senior year because I had been taking business courses at Lee. That meant I was the only senior in biology class! Since phy ed was not a required course at Forest Hill High School, I became the only senior in phy ed too. This will be my first R.E. Lee class reunion because I've always attended the FHHS class reunions in West Palm Beach. I was sad to learn two years ago that Erl Campbell had passed away. I had a big crush on him ever since the 7th grade at John Gorrie Junior High. |

What have you been doing for the past 60 years?:
I've been a very busy woman. I worked as a receptionist for two doctors in West Palm Beach right after graduation so I could build confidence working in my chosen field. I always wanted to be the best secretary a boss could ever want. I moved to Titusville in '65 to work for the Brevard County Solicitor. I left that job after one year because I thought I was too young to learn about the seedier side of life, view all the evidence, see crime scene photos and take legal depositions by shorthand. That was brutal so I decided this was a good time for me to move to Daytona Beach. I went to work for GE/ASD, GE Apollo Support Department in Purchasing and Subcontracting. We bought all of the hardware to build the worldwide tracking equipment for NASA' Apollo Space Program. It was while I was working at GE that I met my husband of 42 years, Tom Yager. He was a senior at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical Institute. He got drafted in '69 during the Vietnam war so he joined the Air Force to continue flying. |
