What have you been doing for the past 60 years?:
OK-I’ll do my ‘homework’ -- sorry we cannot join the fun -Gary will have a knee ‘revision’ (re-do, actually, as he had both knees replaced a year ago –one is badly crooked—but still plays golf frequently!)—he was a sports ‘nut’ in H.S. (way before I knew him). Wow—so long ago! I went to St. Andrews College in N.C., transferred to FSU to finish Nursing BSN ‘66. Then, a Navy Nurse in ’66 , ending up in Portsmouth, Virginia (great experience-thrown into ICU, CCU-whew). Loved Virginia--& that beach (really ALL beaches)—so stayed and worked in local Health Department as Public Health Nurse. So lucky to have then been sent to Hopkins for Masters in Public Health—came back as Nursing Director. But, that was short-lived, as met Gary while in Maryland, so back to Maryland & marriage. Still owed some time to Virginia, so drove all over Northern Virginia as Nurse Consultant for a year—good thing I love to drive (then)! Then felt extremely fortunate to spend a few years helping our wonderful Scott and Lauryn get a sprinting start in the world. Gary worked with Social Security in Baltimore, ending up in computer center (still hates PC’s!). My work began gradually, part time, as nurse in Health Departments—while shuffling kids around to all those activities-piano, scouts (remember all those!), horseback-riding, drum lessons, band activities, motor-cross racing (!), theater. Think it all helped towards good careers they now have. Both are married—1 lives in PA (not too far away) & the other in N.C. (with our darling little grand-daughter, whom we manage to somehow see about every month). Gary retired last year, but I still work (fewer hours) at Health Department with a National program for women’s services, which became my passion, to start up and manage in our local county for ‘under-served’ women. We’ve helped find many early breast cancers & other cancers. Perhaps one of the most unusual blessings is to have my amazing mother in Jacksonville & the ability to go home and stay in my same old bedroom—so I’ve done that every 3 months for years—now more often. We (rather I) LOVE to travel—perhaps coercing Gary to do so-on a cruise next week. Like pets and have had our share of dogs (large), fish, bird, and cats (have always had a cat). Fortunate to stay in touch with my pal, Mary Beth D., whom helped me survive HS (me, the reserved shy gal). Remember the good memories with Band—still plan to take up my ole flute again. Remember Ms Cox—whom helped fine tune my interest in history—esp in ‘Clipper Ships’-(with a lengthy term paper) & American Indian culture. Forced to exercise now due to a bad back/neck (hmmm, that horseback-riding, car accidents, oh yeh, maybe lifting patients, snow skiing-still love..easy slopes!,etc,) Love the snow—what happened this year!? Well……….wrote a lot more than I intended to—but that was fun---as is ‘LIFE’-thanks be to Our Creator. Good to appreciate each day. And really appreciate the Committee and all their work-- & this very nice website! Thanks. |
