Penelope "Penny" Spears (WINTZ)

Marital status: Married
Children: 2
What have you been doing for the past 60 years?: Graduated as a Seminole from FSU. Married my best friend in high school, Claude Spears, a UF graduate. He served in the Army, where he was awarded the Bronze Star for service in Vietnam. Upon his return, we moved to St. Pete where Claude graduated from Stetson Law School and I began my teaching career.
We raised two children in the St. Pete area. Eventually one became a Seminole and the other a Gator. Just like their parents.
Claude set up his law practice and I taught high school until we retired to the Georgia mountains.
We have been “mountain people” for close to twenty years. We live near our two children and four grandkids who reside in the Carolinas.
It’s been a wonderful life.

John Henry (Hank) SPENCER IV

Marital status: Married
Children: 7
Occupation: Plumbing Estimator
What have you been doing for the past 60 years?: From 1964 to 1985 I was in the music business as well as plumbing. 1974 to 1985 music was full time. 1985 til now plumbing is full time.

We were all about 3 years ahead of some members of Lynyrd Skynyrd who went to Lee.

The last group I played with was called The Whiskey River Band. We were well Known in North Fla. and south Ga. We performed in concert with groups such as Alabama, Lee Greenwood, The Judds, Mel McDaniel, Shelly West, Dan Seals, Bertie Higgins, Steve Weriner, Sawyer Brown, Ace Cannon, David Allen Coe, and Bill Monroe, to name a few.

I was inspired to play music by Jack Wade whose band played at our senior prom. He had a band named the Yo Yo's who were later Mouse and the Boys and Brass.

Comment:  Everyday is the first day of the rest of my life and is a GREAT day!
What have you been doing for the past 60 years?: Started out slow at Robert E. Lee. Young, with no direction. Joined the Army right out of high school. Retired from the Army in 1984 (22 years), then worked for the US Government as a civilian for 23 more years and finally retired in 2007. Received my BA in 1986 and my MBA in 1989, then taught for Athens State University until 2007. I then started teaching flight training for Private Pilot through Airline Transport Pilot. Now I just enjoy teaching young students to fly and living each day as the first day of the rest of my life.

Herb and I especially enjoy our children and grandchildren, taking long bike rides, and FSU football.
